The Insignifiance of the Significant
Published on March 5, 2004 By mittens In Philosophy
So, instead of paying attention in my Physics lecture this morning, I got thinking about the size of various things, and how their signifiance varies so. A lot of people in today's society tend to believe that "size does matter," though, for fear of sounding shallow, many of those people would not admit it. However, as you may have guessed by the way this article has been worded thus far, these people would be wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong, and here's some proof to back-up that statement.

Many great things DO back-up the popular statement "Bigger is Better;" such as a bigger checking account balance, a bigger salary, or, as some women/men would have it, bigger parts of the opposite gender's anatomy. However, these things are quite trivial in the grand scheme of the thing, as the greatest things in life, the things that we value the most in life are the small things. And, by this, I mean the simple things, such as a quick "I love you" from a loved one, or a "thinking of you" gesture from a friend; however, I also mean the more complex things, the things we tend to not think about in our day-to-day lives. Marriage, for example, can be signified by nothing at all though, more generally, it is signified by a wedding ring. A small piece of metal that you wear on your finger to signify a life-time committment to someone you love (or, at least, that's the intent of marriage; I won't even go into my thoughts on how many people actually CONSIDER marriage that benevolent bond anymore) [and yes, I realize I'm being melodramatic with the wording, it's fun to do on occasion].

The greatest miracle on-display on this planet, for everyone to plainly see is, of course, the "Miracle of Life" as it is so often referred to as. Believe it or not, each and every one of us [yes, EVEN YOU!] began life as a little tiny white wormy thing, one of a million created each day, by each man on Earth. Now look at you, you're all growed up, maybe looking after your own growing wormy thing, or a whole flock of little growing wormy things.

What's the point of this pretty incoherent little rant? To get people to remember just how special the little things that some of us tend to take for granted are. Sometimes, whether it be because I'm mildly hihg, or because I'm just in that kind of mood, I"ll try to look at things from a completely different perspective, like walking through a crowd of people, and trying to imagine how it must feel to be in a COMPLETELY different frame of mind than mine; it's a trippy feeling, to say the very least, but it's also very refreshing.
